In 1999, Hang Dao Park in the north of Hanoi, at the eastern end of the famous old street, Quan Thanh, was a place of contrasts. Here one could see on late afternoons and at the weekends, family groups and children playing Badminton, getting in one another's way and generally enjoying their leisure time with a little gentle exercise in the fresh air. Itinerant vendors sold postcards and tee-shirts, mostly to the few foreign tourists in town at the time, and youthful barbers cut hair on the wide sidewalk that ran down the road beyond the park railings. Hang Dao was generously endowed with park benches on which one could rest and watch the daytime activity, but it was better not to look behind the seat, to avoid seeing the remains of the activity of the night.
